Hot Milk Cake

April 24, 2020 by Holly Ford 5 Comments

Hot Milk Cake

If you like the smell of hot milk, this fluffy hot milk cake will hit the right place. You will love the vanilla scent of this cake, too. The cake itself has a sponge cake-like texture but much easier to make. The most difficult part of the recipe is beating the eggs to a full volume. I definitely recommend to use an electric mixer to do the job. You can, of course, beat them by hand. I am sure that would make your arm muscle much stronger. Great exercise! This is a quite simple cake and you ...

Patbingsu (Shaved Milky Ice with Red Beans), No Shaving Machine

August 14, 2019 by Holly Ford 3 Comments

Patbingsu (Korean Shaved Milky Ice)

Patbingsu (shaved milky ice with red beans) is a very popular summer dessert in Korea. "Pat" means red beans and "Bingsu" means shaved ice, so It is basically shaved ice with sweetened red beans on top. Some people like to add a bunch of other toppings such as fresh fruits or canned fruit cocktails, rice cakes, cereals or whatever they wants to put on. But my absolute favorite has to be the old fashioned red beans and rice cakes. The less, the better. Originally, most patbingsu is made with ...

Orange French Toast

Orange French Toast

I am not a morning person to be honest. And the breakfast in my house has to be the simplest kind possible, otherwise it will be my family's DIY (do it yourself). However, on occasional weekends when I get 'the breakfast feel' floating throughout my body, I can cook some mean breakfast. And this Orange French Toast is one of my family favorites. ...

Coconut Cream Pie

Coconut Cream Pie

Whenever I travel in U.S, I like to drive on the local high way to pass by their business routes if my time permits. I like to eat at local diners on the roadside. I love listening the old favorite songs from the jukebox and enjoy simply prepared food that are always delicious. Sometimes the waitresses are not as friendly I would hope for, but I consider that is part of a life experience. The best part of eating at diners are their desserts, the pies! I love classic southern style pies. ...

Sweet Rice Corn Hotteok

February 6, 2014 by Holly Ford 14 Comments

There is one special treat that my family is always looking forward to whenever we visit Korea. It is the "Hotteok", the sweet Korean pancakes that you can find on any famous streets of Seoul or elsewhere in Korea. These lovely sweet treats are to-die-for, especially in wintertime. With crisp-chewy dough on the outside and sizzling hot sugary syrup inside, you just have to be very careful not to burn your tongue. Even if you did, that is a small price to pay to indulge in such a heavenly ...

Sweet Potato Rice Donuts

Sweet Potato Rice Donuts

I received a package from my mother-in-law the other day.  In the package there were several vintage brocade tablecloths, napkins, some other linens, and a few crocheted doilies.  They used to belong to my dear grandmother-in-law, Phyllis. Phylis died over 10 years ago and I miss her dearly.  She was a genuinely kind, loving and funny woman.  She was a type of person who can make friends with anybody regardless who they are and what they stand for.  Born as the oldest daughter she helped her ...

Hotteok, the Korean sweet pancakes

November 4, 2011 by Holly Ford 74 Comments

There is something about rain that makes you crave greasy sweet food. It must be a global phenomenon thing... My American friends, Japanese friends, European friends, they all love to eat something sweet, something slightly greasy when there's water falling down from heaven. It's been raining every single day here and I finally decide to make some Hotteok, the Korean sweet pancakes. Besides I found a very special treasure the other day to make this sweet Goddess. ...
